Sewage is a health job before it is a water job. Everything porous the water touched comes out: carpet, pad, drywall at the bottom of the wall, cabinet bases, and anything stored on the floor. There is no cleaning method that makes a contaminated pad safe again, which is the line between this and a clean water removal.
Septic backups are common outside the city limits, in Stanfield, Picacho and Eloy, and they behave differently to a city line backup. A saturated leach field pushes back through the lowest fixture in the house, often the guest bathroom or a shower on the far side, and it keeps doing it until the field is dealt with. After a heavy monsoon week we see it constantly, usually alongside surface flooding.
We contain the area, remove and bag the affected material, extract, disinfect and dry with air scrubbers running throughout, then deal with whatever smell is left. Do not run a household wet vacuum on this. It aerosolises the contamination and ruins the machine.
Technician insight
On a septic property, a backup after heavy monsoon rain is often a saturated leach field rather than a blockage. Pumping the tank buys a few days and does not solve it.
